Metropolitan Open Field Exceeds Expectations for 2019
141 PROFESSIONALS FROM 27 STATES TO COMPETE AT ST. ALBANS FOR $25,000 FIRST PRIZE
GROUPINGS & STARTING TIMES | SCORING RESULTS
The 2019 version of the Metropolitan Open will set a new standard with 141 professionals competing June 5-7 for the $25,000 first prize. Jordan Russell came away with the title in 2018. Russell will not be back to defend his title this year.
In total, 187 players registered for the 2019 version of the Open, also a new record. It is another testament to what has been built with this championship over 14 years. The Country Club of St. Albans continues to perpetuate championship golf in this region. However, the Club will step away from being host of the Open next year as it will be hosting the 2020 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships near the same time. A new venue has not been identified at this time.
The professional field is highlighted by several players who compete regularly on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica and MacKenzie Tour (Canada). 2012 Open Champion and tournament scoring record holder Mitchell Gregson (Waterloo, IL) and our 2016 Champion Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, WI) are both in the field this year. Other notables in the field are James Nitties, a 2011 winner on the Web.com Tour from Melbourne, Australia; Hayden Wood, making his professional debut at St. Albans out of Oklahoma State University; Barrett Kelpin, runner-up in 2018 to Russell and Ryan Sullivan, a pro from North Carolina who has had status on the Web.com Tour in recent years.
On the Amateur side, the top amateurs from the region are in the field. The amateur off to the best start in 2019, Crimson Callahan after capturing the 2019 Old Warson Cup and will be returning from U.S. Open – Sectional Stage of qualifying on Monday. Inaugural Open Champion Skip Berkmeyer and Alex Cusumano, a low amateur in the Open a couple years back.
The 2019 Open will kickoff on Tuesday June 4th with the Metropolitan Pro-Am. The Pro-Am has become such an important piece of the Open allowing sponsors the opportunity to meet and see first hand quite possibly the next PGA Tour star up close.
“For 14 years we have watched the Metropolitan Open grow into one of, if not the finest, Open Championship in the Midwest. The 2019 edition continues that progression as The Country Club of St. Albans continues to separate themselves as champions of championship golf! From the volunteers to this year 75 competitors being welcome into private housing by the St. Albans membership, the Metropolitan Open has set itself apart from other like championships” remarked Curt Rohe, Executive Director of MAGA.
Championship play will commence Wednesday June 5th with all competitors playing 36-holes Wednesday and Thursday before a cut is made for the Final Round Friday. The Championship is FREE for spectators to come out and see one of the strongest fields to tee it up in St. Louis!
