Fredrick & Glennon are Headed to the U.S. Senior & Senior Women's Amateurs
Festus, MO - It was a great day for golf at Crystal Highlands Golf Club with overcast skies, temperatures in the high 70s, and a nice breeze for the U.S. Senior Amateur and U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifiers. We had 23 men and 3 women come to compete for the one qualifying spot and two alternate spots in their respective championships. Play began at 8:30am and was concluded by 2:45pm. Live scores were recorded following each nine holes.
In the U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier, Buddy Allen of Pevely, MO and Wayne Fredrick of Springfield, MO sat tied after the front nine at even (E) par. Both Allen and Frederick completed their first nine holes with one birdie and one bogey. There were numerous players following behind them at one-over (+1) par after nine holes.
With both of these competitors having qualified for this championship in years past, it was sure to be a back nine fight for that top spot. Allen finished his round first, recording a final score of one-over (+1) par. He would then have to wait to see what Frederick would do. Frederick came in three groups behind Allen, and had turned on the jets on the back. With a bogey-free two-under on the back, Frederick took a comfortable claim of the number one place on the leaderboard at two-under (-2) par. This would make Wayne Frederick the qualifier for the U.S. Senior Amateur.
Allen, however, still needed to wait to see if he would get an alternate spot. As more players entered the clubhouse, Allen was tied with Matt McGrath of Des Peres, MO - who still had to return a back nine score. It would come down towards the end, and the question became whether Allen would get the first or second alternate spot. McGrath would fall on the back nine and exit the race for a spot. Buddy Allen would be the first alternate, and Joseph Correnti of St. Albans, MO would come in at two-over (+2) par to take the second alternate spot.
In the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifier, Kathy Glennon of Naples, FL and Dee Johnson of Perryville, MO remained close throughout the round. Glennon made the turn at five-over (+5) and Johnson made the turn at six-over (+6) par. Glennon went even par on the back nine to finish the day at five-over (+5) par to top the leaderboard and be the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifier. Johnson would finish the day at seven-over (+7) par to be the first alternate. Gabriela Rohman of Gulf Shores, AL is the second alternate at nineteen-over (+19) par.
Wayne Fredrick will compete in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship on August 24-29 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, TN. Kathy Glennon will compete in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur on September 21-26 at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle, WA.
