Berkmeyer Wins 5th Normandie Amateur
Skip Berkmeyer captured his 5th Normandie Amateur title in a 3-way playoff with Phil Caravia and Buddy Allen. Berkmeyer birdied the 1st hole at Normandie Golf Club for the victory. The three finished at 1-under 141 for the 35-holes.
Berkmeyer led after Round 1 Saturday with a 3-under 68, one shot ahead of defending champion Andy Frost and 2 ahead of fellow US Open Local Qualifier Alex Cusumano. Coming down the stretch the lead tightened up. Buddy Allen would post a 2nd Round 2-under 69 and 1-under 141 total. Phil Caravia, playing in the penultimate group would also post 141 ahead of Berkmeyer. Berkmeyer had a 1-shot lead playing the always potent 246 yard Par 3 18th at Normandie. He would make bogey 4 to send the 27th championship to a playoff.
The playoff would start on Hole 1. All 3 players had clear shots to the putting green, Berkmeyer and Caravia would find the putting surface with their approach shots, Allen the right bunker. Berkmeyer would roll in his 12 foot birdie putt to cease the title.
