“Keep it Green” Initiative by the MVGCSA
MAGA has a common goal when we visit a member club to conduct a MAGA Championship or USGA Qualifying round, that is to be the least burdensome or intrusive on the membership and staff. We accomplish that by having a great group of volunteers and our staff to carry out the conduct of these events. However, we also have expectations from a course setup and playability standpoint that simply cannot be accomplished without the cooperation of the Superintendent and his crew.
The members of Mississippi Valley Golf Course Superintendents Association (MVGCSA) are asked to do more when we show up at their facilities than any other club staff because of those expectations. For several years the MVGCSA has been very supportive of MAGA by actually being a Type 2 Member Club, or non-real estate golf club. The members of the MVGCSA utilize the USGA GHIN Handicap System for their events and outings that they put on throughout the summer.
In 2012, the MVGCSA started the Keep it Green initiative to raise funds for turf research at the University of Missouri-Columbia and keep that research for clubs and courses in this region. This region is one of the most unique in the country for growing plant species. As Mike Null, Norwood Hills CC Superintendent, pointed out in his most recent Missouri Golf Post article, “More plant species can be grown in Missouri than in any other state in the US.” See more of Mike’s article via the link above.
This year, MAGA is partnering up with the MVGCSA to raise awareness of Keep it Green by reaching out to our 110+ member clubs and their individual members to consider giving to the Keep it Green initiative. The funds from Keep it Green will go to turf research in Missouri and directly benefit the clubs and golfers in our region. For more information on Keep it Green please visit the MVGCSA website!
