US Open Sectional Storylines…
There are always many great stories that make up US Open Sectional Qualifying…here are a few for tomorrow at Old Warson CC.
* Zach Barlow of Percy, Ill., played at the University of Illinois for head coach Mike Small, who is also in the St. Louis sectional field. Barlow advanced to round of 32 at the 2009 U.S. Amateur. He also reached match play at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links and 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur.
* Richard “Skip” Berkmeyer of St. Louis is making his 19th attempt at qualifying for the U.S. Open. He secured a sectional spot with a birdie on the third playoff hole in local qualifying. Berkmeyer has twice been a medalist in stroke play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur and has won three Missouri State Amateur championships.
* Don Berry, 51, of Rogers, Minn., is going through U.S. Open qualifying for the 33rd time. He made his lone Open appearance in 1992. Berry, the brother-in-law of 2003 U.S. Women’s Open champion Hilary Lunke, was inducted into the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame in 2009. He has served as head professional at Edinburgh USA for 17 years.
* Jay Don Blake, 54, has won on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. He has played in the U.S. Open 12 times and tied for sixth in 1992, his best finish in a major championship. Blake, who attended Utah State University, was the 1980 NCAA Division I champion.
* Alex Cusumano is junior on the Loyola University Chicago golf team. He was chosen All-Horizon League in 2012. His father, Frank, is a sportscaster at KSDK in St. Louis and hosts a radio sports talk program.
* Kenneth Li, 15, of Westmont, Ill., is a freshman on the Hinsdale Central High School golf team. He helped lead the school to the 2012 Illinois 3A state championship.
* Mike Small of Champaign, Ill., is the men’s golf coach at the University of Illinois. He has qualified for three U.S. Opens. Small has led the Illini to four consecutive Big Ten Conference championships and five NCAA appearances.
