Back-to-Back Titles for Weldon

weldontrophy2Kyle Weldon became just the second player in MAGA history to record consecutive Metropolitan Amateur titles this weekend as he wins the 23rd Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Persimmon Woods Golf Club.  Weldon posted an Even par round of 70 to hold off a late charge from Phil Caravia to win by 2 strokes.

Weldon began his championship on Thursday with a stellar 5-under 65 to grab the lead out of the gates.  It was a great round in which it looked like he was ready to take charge and end the championship early.  However, playing in the early wave Friday morning where the wind was blowing, Weldon backed up to the field with a 3-over 73.  His lead would remain intact by 2 shots over 2009 champion Skip Berkmeyer and Teddy Jones.

Early in the final round Weldon looked to take control again, making birdies at 6, 7 and 11 to climb back to 5-under for the championship.  Meanwhile, Caravia was making his charge on the back nine making birdie at 16 to get to 1-under.  Two groups later, Weldon would bogey 16 to fall to 3-under.

Even after another bogey at 17, Weldon would hold on and claim the title and add his name for a consecutive year to the Jim Tom Blair Trophy.  With this victory, Weldon also joins Estes and Don Bliss at the only multiple time Metropolitan Amateur Champions.

Finally, we would be remiss to not acknowledge Persimmon Woods Golf Club for hosting our flagship championship!  The golf course was fantastic and club was very cooperative in hosting the regions top amateurs.  See all of the final results on the Plaza Motors Scoreboard via the following link: 23rd Amateur Championship
