Adam Schenk Captures Open Title and $25,000 Payday

With temperatures soaring and summer rearing its head on the final day of the 10th Metropolitan Open, so was the heat of the moment in the final pairing of Adam Schenk and Steven Ihm.  The two friends and roommates on the PGA Latin America tour battled all the way to the end before a birdie by Schenk on the 54th hole gave him the title.

Schenk began the day at 10-under par and a four shot cushion over Ihm.  The Lewis & Clark Course at The Country Club of St. Albans was able to show its true teeth with firmer, faster conditions then the players faced the first two rounds.  The four shot lead had been chipped away the entire day before Ihm caught and overtook that lead on the 17th Hole when a birdie and bogey by Schenk turned the tide.

With a one shot advantage heading to the demanding finishing hole at St. Albans, Ihm found the fairway with his drive.  Schenk also found the fairway and about 25 yards further down than Ihm.  With Ihm playing first to the customary Sunday hole location of the Open on the back right corner of the putting green, he pulled his approach shot a bit left and up the hill between the green and practice green.  Schenk had 167 left of the 480 yard home hole.  Finding himself down a shot he went right at the back right hole with a great shot that left about 4 feet for birdie.

Ihm’s third would require a high lofting pitch that left him an 8 footer coming back for par.  The par putt just slid by leaving the door open for Schenk to putt for the championship and $25,000 check which he rolled in to complete a 3-over day 73.

Chris Thompson, a runner-up in 2013 and 2014, finished solo 3rd. Three amateurs survived the cut, Sam Migdal finished at 5-over 215 to earn low-amateur honors.
