Siegfried Birdies 1st Extra Playoff Hole for Amateur Championship
Jimmy Siegfried began the final round of the 25th Amateur Championship 8 shots back of the leader Sam Migdal, knowing it would take a special round to get in position for the title. He started his round Saturday with a double bogey 6 at Boone Valley Golf Club. However, six birdies on the card, including 3 of the final 4 holes posted a a 3-over total as the final groups made their way to the clubhouse.
The final group of Sam Migdal and Skip Berkmeyer knew exactly where they stood coming off the 17th green, 2 and 1 shot ahead of the clubhouse leader Siegfried. Migdal would find the right fairway bunker and Berkmeyer the left rough. A triple bogey by Migdal and bogey from Berkmeyer would send the 25th Amateur to a playoff for the second consecutive year.
Siegfried and Berkmeyer headed to the 15th Hole, the starting hole of the 4-hole aggregate playoff format. The 15th was a drivable par 4 Saturday, tees moved up to 282 yards for the final round. Berkmeyer would make a par while Siegfried a bogey, advantage Berkmeyer.
After equaling pars on Hole 16, Siegfried would make a long birdie putt after pulling his drive into the adjoining 7th Hole. Par by Berkmeyer would put the two at Even par heading to the great finishing Hole 18 of Boone Valley. Each found the fairway and each missed the green. Berkmeyer’s second shot would end up in the pitch mark of his 3rd shot of his 54th hole during regulation. He would get up and down as would Siegfried to force an additional hole.
The playoff would go back to 18. Each would find the fairway and the putting green in 2. Berkmeyer had a lengthy putt of 50 plus feet where Siegfried was under the hole about 18 feet. After missing his birdie chance, Siegfried rolled in his putt and was crowned the 25th Amateur Champion.
Big thank to Boone Valley Golf Club for hosting the 25th Amateur! Also to the many volunteers who gave their time this week to allow to bring live scoring.
