2015 Amateur Series Wraps Up With Championship at Aberdeen
The 5th season of the Amateur Series wrapped up this weekend at Aberdeen Golf Club with the season ending 2-day championship.
Thirty-six total players participated this weekend after the season long Amateur Series began in April at WingHaven CC. Participants played in different divisions, Scratch Open, Net Open, Senior Scratch and Net throughout the year. Players earned points playing in the series to earn places into the championship this weekend.
Bret Sinak (Persimmon Woods GC; top left in picture) took the top spot with rounds of 81-74 to clear regular season champion Lew Weingart by 5 shots in the championship. Steve Zonca (Metropolitan GC) had a great weekend on the always tough Aberdeen layout. Zonca had net rounds of 68-67 for 9-under total and bested Doug Williams (Metropolitan GC) and Marvin Frazier (Joachim GC) by 7 shots in the Senior Net championship. Regular season champion Don Humphrey (Ruth Park GC) was t-11 on the weekend.
In the Net Open Division, Sangwon Son (Metropolitan GC; lower left in picture) was the only finisher under par to capture the Net Open Championship with round of 72-71. Son was 5 shot better than regular season champion Cory Mahoney (Metropolitan GC), Mahoney did comeback strong with a Round 2 net 6-under 66.
Lastly, in the Senior Scratch championship, Schooner Fitzgerald (Metropolitan GC) had bookend 78’s to capture the title by 2 shots over Ollie Crow (Raintree GC). Crow had great 74 in Round 2 to come back after an opening 84. Regular season champion Pat Ross (The Orchards) was not able to participate this weekend.
