Sam Migdal Adds MAGA Champion to Resume
In his three previous matches Sam Migdal had not gone to Hole 18 at Old Warson Country Club and only reached the 17th Hole once. On Sunday afternoon, Migdal found himself 2-down playing the 16th and needing a comeback. Migdal needed to make something happen on 16. After a perfect drive, he elected to go for the green in two on the par 5 16th. His opponent, Skip Berkmeyer, had already laid up to the end of the fairway. Migdal would put his second shot into the water hazard short of the green thinking his run had come to an end.
However, Berkmeyer had pushed his layup shot a bit right and had a tree hindering his angle to the 16th green. Attempting a low punch shot under the tree, he too found the water hazard that Migdal found. Both players went to the drop zone and played to the putting green with Migdal winning the hole and cutting into the lead.
Migdal found the putting green on the par 3 17th while Berkmeyer missed long. Playing first, Migdal curled a 60 foot putt into the hole for a birdie 2 and squared the match. Migdal had the only birdies in the final match on 8 and 17.
Migdal found the fairway on 18 and Berkmeyer was just off the fairway right. Away, Berkmeyer just missed the green right. Migdal came up short in his approach in the front bunker. Berkmeyer missed his par putt after chipping on and Migdal poured his in to win his third consecutive hole and capture the title.
Migdal defeated Nick Arman in the morning semifinal match 4&3 while Berkmeyer needed extra holes to defeat Phil Caravia Sunday morning. Migdal adds his name to the Old Warson Cup which remains at Old Warson CC during the year. This is Berkmeyer’s 6th runner-up finish to go along with 5 victories in MAGA match play championship.
