11th METROPOLITAN OPEN TO BE CONDUCTED AT ST. ALBANS JULY 8-10

103 PROFESSIONALS IN FIELD WILL COMPETE FOR $25,000 FIRST PRIZE

PlazaMotorsPinkThe Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA) is set to conduct the 11th Metropolitan Open Championship Presented by Plaza Motors at The Country Club of St. Albans July 8-10 on the Lewis & Clark Course.  The field this year will feature top amateurs from the St. Louis region and 103 professionals from 21 states and Australia.  Without question this is the deepest, strongest field assembled for the Metropolitan Open.

The first place prize of $25,000 will be awarded on Sunday to the champion.  Curt Rohe, Executive Director of MAGA stated, “Again in 2016, the commitment of The Country Club of St. Albans to provide a tremendous test of golf, conduct the Pro-Am, host these players in their homes and provide volunteers from the membership is so important in attracting some of the countries top young professionals and allow us to provide the $25,000 first place prize in 2016!”

Indiana pro Adam Schenk (pictured) won the 2015 Open in a thrilling last 4 holes with his good friend and roommate Steven Ihm.   Schenk is enjoying great success on SchenkTrophythe Web.com this season and currently sits at 29th on the money list.  Schenk commented on his victory, “St. Albans was definitely a championship course, with a setup as close to a Web.com event as I have seen.  The St. Albans staff was very accommodating, it was a well run event and I could not have asked for a better experience!”

This years field includes past winners on the Web.com, Nationwide and PGA Tour LatinoAmerica.  First time participants Ed Lora and St. Louisan Jay Williamson have won on the Web.com and Nationwide Tours.  Tim O’Neal, who has played in the Open in the past most recently won on PGA Tour LatinoAmerica this past May.  Others scheduled to play who have recently played in Web.com events are Chris Thompson (3-time Open Runner-Up) and Derek Tolan.  2015 Runner-up Steven Ihm is back in the field this year as well as past champions Skip Berkmeyer (2006), Mitchell Gregson (2012) and Chris Brant (2014).

Sam Migdal, 2016 Old Warson Cup Champion and recently crowned Missouri State Amateur Champion, finished as Low-Amateur in 2015 and is in the field this year looking to continue his 2016 success.

The Champion will have his name etched onto the James S. Manion Trophy.  The Manion Trophy was donated by Jimmy Manion to honor his father, one of the St. Louis areas greatest amateur golfers.  The trophy remains on display at The Country Club of St. Albans throughout the year.

The Open will kick-off on Thursday afternoon with the Pro-Am.  This will be the fifth year of the Pro-Am and has become an excellent way to showcase some of the young professionals in the field and meet some of our great supporters of the Open.  The Pros will play for a skins pool where $1,000 will be up for grabs.

Championship play will commence Friday with all competitors playing 36-holes Friday and Saturday before a cut to the Low 40 and ties is made for the Final Round Sunday.  The Championship is FREE for spectators to come out and see professional golf in St. Louis!
