Frost Medalist; Groom and Edwards Earn Spots in 2016 US Senior Amateur
It was a good day for the locals in 2016 US Senior Amateur Qualifying at The Country Club of St. Albans as Andy Frost and Scott Edwards each earn spots into the championship to be played at Old Warson CC September 17-22.
Frost was the only competitor of the 57 in the field to go under par on the 6646 yard, par 70 Tavern Creek layout Monday. It was the first USGA medal for Frost in 40 years of trying. There were 3 spots available on Monday and Steve Groom would secure the 2nd spot with a 3-over 73 on the day.
The final spot would come down to a 5 for 1 playoff at 5-over 75. In that playoff was Scott Edwards, Jim Holtgrieve, Ed Walsworth, Phil Skinner and Terrence Flynn. Skinner and Holtgrieve would bow after the 1st playoff hole, hole 1 of Tavern Creek. Walsworth, Flynn and Edwards all found the fairway on hole 7, but Walsworth could not get up and down from the bunker and earn the 2nd Alternate position.
On to the 200 yard par 3 17th, Flynn found the water hazard fronting the putting green while Edwards was safely on the back fringe. Edwards would cosy a putt down to a foot and tap in for a par and a spot in US Senior Amateur. Flynn, from Franklin, TN would get 1st Alternate position.
All of Monday’s results can ben found on the Plaza Motors Scoreboard via the link below.
