Jasper Adds Name to Jim Tom Blair Trophy
The title that eluded Shawn Jasper back in 2003 is now his, 27th Metropolitan Amateur Champion! Jasper lost out in a playoff for the title in 2003 at Persimmon Woods to Scott Edwards. “This is one that eluded me in 2003, I kind of fell into it back then as a high schooler. Obviously this is one you want to put on your resume. To be a Match Play Champion, the two Opens its awesome and I feel privileged to be on this trophy with the likes of Jim Holtgrieve and Skip Berkemeyer” said Jasper after completing the “MAGA Grand Slam!”
Jasper commented on his final round today, going into it with a 2 shot lead, “I knew the golf course was going to play difficult as it was getting harder everyday. It was nice to walk up the 18th fairway knowing that I could 3 putt and get the win.” Jasper would complete the championship with rounds of 70-71-74 for a 1-over par 215 total.
Ryan Eckelkamp started the day 6 shots back of Jasper. Firing the only subpar round of Saturday with a 1-under 70 boosted him into a solo runner-up finish at Norwood Hills CC. The East Side Amateur champion for earlier in the season, Eckelkamp improved each day with rounds of 74-73-70 for a 217 total.
Thank you to Norwood Hills Country Club for their generous hospitality and capable cooperation in hosting the Amateur for the 3rd time.
