2017 Metropolitan Players of the Year

The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association would like to present our 2017 Players of the Year who will be honored on November 2nd at Old Warson Country Club.

Men’s Player of the Year – Sam Migdal:  This is Sam’s second consecutive Player of the Year award.  Migdal continued his 2016 season by starting 2017 with a victory in the 2017 Old Warson Cup in May.  His hot start to the season continued at U.S. Open Qualifying where he advanced through to Sectionals.  He finished Runner-Up at the Missouri State Amateur, vying for back-to-back titles.  Migdal qualified for his 2nd USGA championship in July at Spencer T. Olin in the U.S. Amateur Qualifier.  His 2017 campaign continued with the title in the Missouri Stroke Play Championship.  The last event to earn points was the Metropolitan Amateur Championship where he survived the cut to wrap up the 2017 Player of the Year title.

Senior Men’s Player of the Year – Jeff Johnson:  Jeff Johnson earns his 4th Senior Player of the Year Award in 2017, having also earning the award in 2011, 2012 and 2013.  Johnson’s strong play began at the Normandie Amateur where he was 2nd Low Senior.  Johnson tied for Low Senior at the East Side Amateur and would make match play at the Missouri State Amateur.  He was one of 3 seniors to survive the cut at the Metropolitan Amateur Championship and finish T-13 at the Metropolitan Senior.  A 9th place finish in the St. Louis District Senior set him up to make a run at the Senior Player of the Year title going into the Missouri Senior Championship.  A T-4 finish on his home course Bogey Hills CC in the MGA Senior would lock up the 2017 Senior Player of the Year race.

Women’s Player of the Year – Kathy Glennon: Kathy has had a great couple years on the golf course having won the MWGA Senior Player of the Year in 2016.  This season, Glennon captured the MWGA Mid-Amateur title, qualified for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and was chosen to represent Missouri on the USGA Women’s State Team Championship.  Glennon had a T-18 finish in the MWGA Amateur Championship at Algonquin and, after leading Round 1 of the Metropolitan Women’s, finished T-4 for the Championship.  Glennon would complete her summer by winning the St. Louis Women’s District Invitational title.

Lastly, we are excited present our highest honor in 2017 to Bob Phillips.  Phillips will receive the Meritorious Service Award on November 2nd for his 24+ years of service and commitment to MAGA and amateur golf in this region.  Phillips began his volunteer career with MAGA when, as Norwood Hills President, sought a USGA championship for club.  He went to Tom O’Toole, Jr. and put into motion to secure the 2001 USGA Senior Amateur Championship.  After which, he said “if MAGA/Tom can help our Norwood Hills CC, I should be able to help them out as well!”  He is most well known for his position at the 1st Tee as a Starter for a majority of these years.
