Metropolitan Open Continues to Raise the Bar

118 PROFESSIONALS FROM 23 STATES TO COMPETE FOR LARGEST PURSE IN HISTORY

The 2017 version of the Metropolitan Open set a new standard with 115 professionals competing in June last year for the $25,000 first prize.  DJ Brigman, a veteran who had spent time on the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour brought home the first prize check with an 11-under performance over 54 holes.  Brigman was 2 shots clear of the trio of Brian Bullington, Tim Crouch and Ryan Sullivan who all tied for 2nd.

The 2018 has topped the 2017 professional field by 3 with 118 professionals from 23 states coming to St. Albans June 6-8 to compete for a top prize of $25,000 and what will be the largest purse in history.  A full field of 156 players, which includes 38 of the top amateurs from the area, will compete for the James S. Manion Trophy.

The professional field is highlighted by several players who compete regularly on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica and MacKenzie Tour (Canada).  A few notables include son of PGA Tour veteran Fred Funk, Taylor Funk (Ponte Vedra, FL); 2012 Open Champion and tournament scoring record holder Mitchell Gregson (Waterloo, IL); and our 2016 Champion Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, WI) who has spent time the last 2 seasons on the Web.com Tour.

Joe Oglesby, CCSA Board President along with Morgan Gonzales (General Manager) and Joe Schwent (Head Golf Professional) remarked, “The members at The Country Club of St. Albans have made it a priority to support championship-level golf over the years and feel honored to be able to host the 13th Metropolitan Open Championship.  Now that it’s been over a year since the completion of our course restoration project, we are looking forward to seeing this talented field take on the challenge of our Lewis and Clark course.  We wish the competitors the best of luck on behalf of the membership.”

On the amateur side, Brad Carpenter returns as the Low Amateur from last year.  He and Parker Goldman were the only two amateurs to survive the cut.  2016 & 2017 Metropolitan Player of the Year Sam Migdal is in the field along with the inaugural Metropolitan Open Champion Skip Berkmeyer and 2018 Old Warson Cup Champion Drew Pranger.    The 2018 Open will open on Tuesday June 5th with the Metropolitan Pro-Am.  The Pro-Am has become such an important piece of the Open allowing sponsors the opportunity to meet and see first hand quite possibly the next PGA Tour star up close.

“For 12 years we have watched the Metropolitan Open grow into one of, if not the finest, Open Championship in the Midwest.  The 2018 edition just continues that progression as The Country Club of St. Albans continues to separate themselves as champions of championship golf!   From the volunteers to this year over 65 competitors being welcome into private housing by the St. Albans membership, the Metropolitan Open has set itself apart from other like championships” remarked Curt Rohe, Executive Director of MAGA.

Championship play will commence Wednesday June 6th with all competitors playing 36-holes Wednesday and Thursday before a cut is made for the Final Round Friday.  The Championship is FREE for spectators to come out and see one of the strongest fields to tee it up in St. Louis!
