Metropolitan Cup to be Renamed The Thomas O. Sobbe, Jr. Cup
St. Louis, MO – Recently the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA) lost long-time Executive Board member and one of its most avid supporters, Tom Sobbe, known to most as “Sob”. In an action by the Executive Board of MAGA at its Spring Meeting, the Board voted unanimously to rename the Metropolitan Cup, its long-standing Member Club competition, to be now and forever known as The Thomas O. Sobbe, Jr. Cup. In his memory, friends of Tom Sobbe have donated an antique British silver cup (circa 1900) to bear the name of The Thomas O. Sobbe, Jr. Cup.
“Tom Sobbe was a spectacular leader and advocate of amateur golf. It is appropriate that we donate this silver cup to forever bear his name to recognize his contribution and commitment to the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association and the game of golf,“ said Doug Albrecht, who led the friends of Tom Sobbe effort.
The Metropolitan Cup, now known as The Thomas O. Sobbe, Jr. Cup, is a widely popular team competition conducted by MAGA that runs throughout the golf season. MAGA Member Clubs compete against each other in a season-long competition. Member Club teams are comprised of eight (8) members, including a club professional, playing six matches each round. The competition is divided between the round robin Divisional Play and single-elimination Playoffs where the champion is determined.
MAGA conducts annually ten (10) championships, ten (10) USGA qualifying rounds and its Amateur Series. MAGA provides the USGA GHIN Handicap Service to 140 Member Clubs across the St. Louis Metropolitan region, Central and Southern Illinois. MAGA is also the regional authority on the Rules of Golf and Rules of Amateur Status. Additionally, MAGA is one of the Allied Golf Associations authorized by the United States Golf Association.
