Walsh, McMinn Come Away 19th Junior Amateur Champions

They say it is always hard to win on your home golf course and that was proven Tuesday as two young men, who call Forest Hills CC home, battled to the 36th hole to decide the James M. Holtgrieve Boys Championship.  Zach Walsh and Max Floyd were tied after 27-hole at 3-over par for the championship and remained tied when they left the 16th Hole of Round 2.

Walsh stumbled a bit on the par-5 17th with a bogey to give Floyd a 1 shot advantage going into 18.  Both hit great drives, Walsh in the middle of the fairway and Floyd just off in the first cut.  Walsh played first and hit a hole-high shot knowing he probably needed a birdie to force a playoff.  Floyd would miss the green just left of the back-middle hole location.

Floyd played first, and had a delicate chip to get up and down.  He came up short and had to chip again, which he would settle in about 4 foot.  Walsh missed his birdie putt and made the 4 footer back for par.  Floyd had that 4 footer which would send the 19th Boys Championship to a playoff; however, it spun out and Walsh would earn the title.  Walsh finished with rounds of 75-74-149 (+5).

Floyd would share the Runner-Up honors with Ray Winter.  Floyd and Winter finished 74-76 and 75-75 respectively.  Winter’s 75 on Tuesday included 9-hole splits of 44-31 with and Eagle on the par-4 10th.

In the Barbara A. Berkmeyer Girls’ Championship, Alyssa McMinn would walk away with the title by 2 shot over Momo Kikuchi.  McMinn had rounds of 83-79-162 to add her name to the Berkmeyer trophy.  McMinn will be a freshman at the University of Evansville this fall and will be playing on the golf team.  Kikuchi, a Pattonville HS student, had bookend 82’s to earn Runner-Up honors.

In the Age 14-15 Division, Kal Kolar would earn the Champion spot with rounds of 76-76.  Jack Guyot was Runner-up at 156.

In the Age 12-13 Division, Luke McLaughlin from Bellerive CC would come away as the champion in his Division.  McLaughlin had rounds of 87-85.  Ryan Mooney, from Algonquin GC, finished 90-95 for Runner-Up honors.
