Winstead Leads U.S. Amateur Qualifying With 8-under 63

Trey Winstead, a sophomore to be at Louisiana State University, fired an opening round 63 on Monday to lead the field of 120 U.S. Amateur hopefuls.  Winstead was a 2017-18 All-SEC Freshman Team performer for the Tigers.

Skip Berkmeyer led the locals at Westwood CC on Monday, Berkmeyer finished with 5-under 66 and will join Winstead and Ethan Brue (Ashland, IL) in the final grouping Tuesday.  Brue went out early and finished with 67.

120 players started the day Monday in hopes of earning one of 5 qualifying spots to the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links August 13-19.  The field was cut to the low 36 plus ties and anyone within 8 shots of the last qualifying spot.  68 was the score, 2 golfers were T-4 giving all the golfers with 76 and better the opportunity to come back Tuesday.
