Winstead Medalist; Berkmeyer and 3 Others Advance to Pebble Beach
To say Trey Winstead had it going the last 2 days at Westwood CC is putting lightly, very lightly. The sophomore to be at Louisiana State University in the fall fired rounds of 63-64-127 for a 15-under total to earn medalist honors and a spot at the 2018 U.S. Amateur in Pebble Beach. Winstead had 2 eagles and 13 birdies to just 2 bogeys on his scorecard over 36-holes.
Skip Berkmeyer, playing in the final group with Winstead Tuesday, was the only local golfer to advance to the U.S. Amateur. Berkmeyer had rounds of 66-72, 4-under total to earn one of the last 2 qualifying spots. He and Kory Franks would tie at 4-under.
The other two spots would go to Ethan Brue, from Ashland, IL and Cole Harris, from Carmel, IN. Brue had bookend rounds of 67 to finish second at 8-under. Harris went 69-68 for a 5-under total.
William Hocker, from Grapevine, TX and a Webster University student, would earn the 1st Alternate spot in a playoff that lasted 5 holes. Jace Guthmiller, from Lincoln, NE, got the 2nd Alternate spot.
The 2018 U.S. Amateur will be played August 13-19 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California. For all of the results from Westwood Country Club, click here.
