A little history was made Monday as Ballwin Golf Club, the 9-hole municipal club in West County, hosted a USGA championship qualifier conducted by MAGA. The 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship qualifier was played on Monday where 41 teed it up in hopes of securing two qualifying spots into the U.S. Senior Amateur.
Tim Barry, from Parkville, MO, came away with medalist honors shooting an Even par round of 71 over the 6,998 yard Ballwin layout. Three tied for the 2nd qualifying spot at 73 and went to a playoff. The 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur will be played August 25-30 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, OR.
Joe Malench, from Edwardsville, IL outlasted Steve Groom in three holes to claim the 2nd qualifying spot. Malench, 58, will play in his 2nd USGA championship having qualified for the U.S. Amateur 40 years prior at the age of 18. He remembers it well, losing to John Cook 5&3 who would go on to win the U.S. Amateur at Plainfield Country Club.

Many thanks to Ballwin Golf Club staff for their hospitality and the City of Ballwin for their excitement in allowing us to conduct a USGA qualifier at their facility. The golf course was in magnificent condition!
