Meadowbrook Repeats, Captures 5th Thomas O. Sobbe Cup
FINAL MATCH RESULTS (MEADOWBROOK CC vs. NORWOOD HILLS CC)
SEMIFINAL #1 (ALGONQUIN GC vs. MEADOWBROOK CC)
SEMIFINAL #2 (FRANKLIN COUNTY CC vs. NORWOOD HILLS CC)
For the 2nd consecutive season, and 5th overall, Meadowbrook CC came away with the Thomas O. Sobbe Cup Friday at Glen Echo Country Club. Enduring a long day in the new format of playing the Semifinal and Final match of the Sobbe Cup, Meadowbrook CC persevered and showed its strength in the former Metropolitan Cup championship.
In a great final match that looked like was heading to a second consecutive playoff, the Meadowbrook Four-Ball team of John Rankin/Scott Mannis won holes 17 and 18 to earn a crucial half-point that ended up being the difference.
Meadowbrook faced a tough Algonquin squad in the morning Semifinal match, Algonquin had knocked off playoff #1 Seed Glen Echo CC on their home track. Algonquin got on the board first with a Four-Ball win to grab an early 1-0 lead. Meadowbrook’s Singles Scratch matches pulled ahead each winning to go 2-1. The match in this group was from pros Mike Leech (Algonquin) and Craig Liddle (Meadowbrook), a tale of two 9s. Liddle had a 6up lead after 9 holes; however, Leech battled back and would get a Halve. Meadowbrook went on to win 4-2.
The second Semifinal featured Franklin County CC and Norwood Hills CC. A very close battle all day where each squad had leads in 3 matches throughout the morning, Norwood would sneak ahead in the 1st Four-Ball match to earn the win 4-2 and advance to the afternoon Final.
Earlier this year, MAGA changed the name of the Metropolitan Cup to the Thomas O. Sobbe Cup after the passing of our long-time Executive Committee member. Friends of Tom Sobbe donated the beautiful new silver trophy seen in the picture.
