2019 Old Warson Cup Field Set for Kickoff of Season
2019 Old Warson Cup | May 4 & 5 | Old Warson Country Club
The 2019 MAGA championship season is set to kickoff with the Association’s annual match play event, the Old Warson Cup. The Old Warson Cup has a permanent home at Old Warson Country Club and features 16 of the best amateurs from the previous seasons Player of the Year race.
These 16 players were invited based on their finish on the 2018 MAGA Player of the Year Point Standings. Drew Pranger (Glen Echo CC) had a superb 2018 campaign which began at Old Warson a year ago capturing the match play title. Pranger went on to win the 28th Amateur Championship in August at St. Albans and earn the 2018 Player of the Year. He comes into Old Warson, not only as the defending champion, but as the #1 Seed. Pranger will face Frankie Thomas (Meadowbrook CC) in the opening round.
Five-time champion in this event, Skip Berkmeyer (The Legends CC) comes in as the #2 Seed. Skip was T-2 behind Pranger in the Metropolitan Amateur and a Semifinalist in the Old Warson Cup. His last win came in 2009 when he defeated Tom Barry in the final. Berkmeyer will face Brad Carpenter (Franklin County CC) in the Round of 16.
A runner-up in 2014, Alex Cusumano (Norwood Hills CC) will come into the 2019 Old Warson Cup as the #3 Seed. Cusumano earn points in every event he played in 2018, making the cut at the Metropolitan Open and reaching the Quarters in the Old Warson Cup. Cusumano will get Darren Stoffel (Glen Echo CC), the 2018 East Side Amateur champ in the opening match.
Rounding out the top 4 seeds is Kyle Szyhowski (Metropolitan eClub). Szyhowski had two top-10 finishes in the Metropolitan Amateur and East Side in 2018 along with Low Amateur in the Open. Szyhowski will face Ryan Eckelkamp (Franklin County CC) in the Round of 16.
