Goldenstein Leads 27th Women’s Amateur After Day 1

Even Par 71 Leads; Former Champions Right on Heels

Emily Goldenstein was telling us before today’s round how little golf she has played since graduating from University of Memphis last May.  However, the former Parkway West Longhorn and 2012 Metropolitan Girls’ Junior Amateur Champion completed a solid round of Even par at Gateway National Golf Links Monday to lead the 27th Women’s Amateur.

Right before Monday’s round, Goldenstein came over to the MAGA Tournament Operations trailer and asked some questions about the 2019 Rules of Golf changes, saying “I have not played a competitive round under the new Rules” and asking, “what are some things I can and cannot do?”  The former Memphis Tiger has capitalized on her competitive rounds since graduation.  She also captured the 2018 Missouri Women’s Amateur.

One shot back of Goldenstein is McKenna Montgomery (pictured left), 2017 Women’s Champion.  Montgomery, who is headed to her Senior campaign at Union University in Jackson, TN, had a 1-over par round of 72 Monday to find herself in contention for a 2nd title.

16-time Women’s Amateur champion Ellen Port is alone in 3rd after a 3-over par 74 Monday.  Port will play in the final grouping with Goldenstein and Montgomery Tuesday.

In the Net Championship, Vickie Ressler and Josephine Green are tied at the top with Net 4-over rounds of 75.
