Winstead Leads Marathon Day 1 of U.S. Amateur Qualifying

THREE SPOTS AVAILABLE TO PLAY AT PINEHURST RESORT NEXT MONTH

Trey Winstead (Baton Rouge, LA) leads after Round 1 of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship Qualifying Monday at Meadowbrook Country Club.  Winstead, who in 2018 qualified here in St. Louis with an impressive 15-under performance at Westwood CC, shot a 4-under round of 68 to open his attempt to grab one of the 3 available spots.  The junior at Louisiana State University played in the afternoon wave on Monday, which went later than normal due to a 2.5 hour delay in starting times Monday morning from the deluge Mother Nature brought to the St. Louis area.

Eighty-six (86) golfers made up the field coming into Monday, 79 teed it up in Round 1.  Eight (8) of the 79 fired 1-under rounds of 71 over the 7108 yard layout.  The field was cut to the low 32 scores and ties to play in Round 2 Tuesday.  Winstead will lead going into Round 2 for one of the three (3) available spots to play in the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship that will be played August 12-18 at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.
