Carpenter Takes 29th Amateur Championship
Adds Name to the Jim Tom Blair Trophy
Brad Carpenter may be one of the quietest, unassuming golfers in the region, but the recent Franklin County Country Club member made a loud statement at Aberdeen Golf Club this week with his play in capturing the 29th Amateur Championship. Carpenter was the only golfer with subpar play in all three rounds with rounds of 70-66-70-206 (-7).
Carpenter got off to a hot start knowing the front 9 is the side you must attack and score birdieing 3 of the first 5 holes and pushing his lead to 4 shots. Early this lead would be over Carpenters fellow competitor, friend and fellow Franklin County CC member Ryan Eckelkamp. Eckelkamp, who lead after Round 1 would finish his championship T-4.
Three shots back of Carpenter and Runner-up would be Curtis Brokenbrow (pictured left). Brokenbrow, who hails from Manchester, England, recently graduated from Missouri Baptist University. Brokenbrow would get to within 2 shots of Carpenter late in the final round; however, a bogey on the par 5 17th would have him settle with a 4-under total and solo Runner-up finish. Brokenbrow had rounds of 72-68-69.
2009 champion Skip Berkmeyer ended his 27th consecutive Amateur Championship with a solo 3rd finish. Berkmeyer carded rounds of 73-68-69, including both the 68 and 69 rounds at bogey free golf.
Aberdeen Golf Club could not have been a better host this week to the 29th Amateur Championship. Many thanks to Rockney Dollarhide, owner of Aberdeen Golf Club, and his wonderful staff who showed unbelievable hospitality and presented a championship golf course to identify the 29th Amateur Champion!
