O’Neill Claims Senior Amateur Title at Annbriar
Out Duels Two-Time Champ Edwards for Win
Mike O’Neill (The Quarry at Crystal Springs) is fairly new to this competition golf thing since retiring in the last couple years. He played in high school and college, but life got in the way of golf. However, the 60 year old has played in the Senior events this summer and made sure he is known on Tuesday at Annbriar by capturing the 27th Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship. O’Neill had rounds of 71-74 for a 1-over 145 total to best two-time Senior champion Scott Edwards by a shot.
O’Neill shared the lead with defending champion Buddy Allen after Monday, each shot 1-under 71. Allen struggled on Tuesday at Annbriar to an 83 and would fall back. Scott Edwards looked to be the man to beat after 9 holes on Tuesday. The now 65 year old, who won this title in 2009 & ’11, made 4 birdies on the opening 9 to get to 4-under for the championship with a 2 shot lead. Having not played a lot of competitive golf the last couple years due to injuries and surgeries, Edwards admittedly got tired toward the end. He closed with 5 consecutive bogeys down the stretch.
O’Neill with his victory, will have his name go on the George F. Meyer Trophy along with Edwards and the likes of Don Dupske (3-time champ) and Jim Holtgrieve (2-time). O’Neill is pictured accepting the trophy from Rick Meyer, Jr., son of the trophy namesake and MAGA Executive Board Member. O’Neill also now takes the lead in the 2019 Metropolitan Senior Player of the Year Standings after his win.
The Senior Amateur Championship also consists of Age Divisions from 50 to 75 and over. Those in the Age Divisions played for Low Gross and Low Net honors. Pictured below are those who won these Divisions:
AGE 75 & OVER: Low Net – Stephen Weinstock; Low Gross – Don Dupske
AGE 65-69: Low Net – Tim Leonberger
AGE 50-59: Low Gross – Mike Twellman; Low Net – Joe Blandina
AGE 70-74: Low Net – Bill Braun
AGE 60-64: Low Net – Tom Ghnouly
