Bob Shogren (1936-2020)

On Friday, the St. Louis golfing community lost one of its greatest ambassadors.  Bob Shogren, better known as “Shogie”, passed away after very long battle with cancer.  Shogren celebrated his 84th birthday back on January 15th.

Well known to many in the St. Louis region as an authority on the Rules of Golf, Shogren got his start in the Rules in the early 90’s working with the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association in its early beginnings.  Shogren would go on to assist many of the other golfing association’s around St. Louis, working closely with the Gateway PGA in conducting their championships and events.  Later, Shogren would work with the PGA of America in conducting their Winter Series in Florida, working closely with Kerry Haigh.

Upon learning of Shogren’s passing, Haigh commented, “Bob will always be a part of the PGA of America and our rules committee, even though he was not a PGA member, he was truly one of a kind and someone I am truly thankful to have known and to be able to call a friend.”  Shogren would get his “major” in 2018 when he was invited to be on the PGA of America Rules Committee for the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club.

Recently, MAGA honored Shogren with its highest honor, the Meritorious Service Award for his long-standing dedication and service to golf in this region.
