2020 Metropolitan Open Championship set to kick off Thursday, June 18th
The 2020 Metropolitan Open will move venues this year to Lake Forest Country Club after previously being held at The Country Club of St. Albans. With this move, comes new challenges for golfers who have competed in the championship in years prior. Lake Forest Country Club has stepped up to the plate to deliver more than a championship ready golf course for the field to compete on.
After what has been a long couple of months with tournaments being postponed and dealing with course regulations by the state, the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association is excited to be conducting our first major championship of the season. With the world seemingly on a standstill, being able to support a golf event of this size was in question. Thankfully, Lake Forest Country Club has worked with us every step of the way to make sure our competitors would be able to take to the course during the originally scheduled dates for this championship.
The professional side of the field is made up of golfers from all across the country. Making a return to the tournament is Ryan Sullivan. “This tournament is a bit of a hidden gem. Once the word got out to more professionals how good the field was, the competition continued to grow each year making it one of the best I’ve ever played in,” Sullivan said. Ryan currently has status on the Korn Ferry tour and previously won a tournament on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica. University of Illinois Head Coach Mike Small is also returning to the field. Mike has competed in over 50 PGA Tour events including 12 major championships.
On the Amateur side, the top amateurs from the region are in the field. Inaugural Open champion Skip Berkmeyer returns for what will be his 15th year in a row playing in the championship. When talking to Skip about this year’s championship he had this to say, “The Metropolitan Open Championship is a rare chance to get to watch high performing amateurs from the area as well as professionals that could win on the PGA Tour.” Also in the field this year is Crimson Callahan. Crimson our 2019 Old Warson Cup and will be looking to defend that title later this year.
The 2020 Open will kickoff on Wednesday June 17th with the Metropolitan Pro-Am. The Pro-Am has become such an important piece of the Open allowing sponsors the opportunity to meet and see first hand quite possibly the next PGA Tour star up close.
“We are simply excited to be able to conduct the 15th Open Championship at Lake Forest Country Club!” remarked Curt Rohe, Executive Director of MAGA. “With everything that has taken place these last couple of months, to provide an opportunity for these professionals and top amateurs from our region to compete is first and foremost. However, with professionals again coming from 21 states it proves the Open has grown to be one of the elite Opens in the United States.”
Championship play will commence Thursday June 18th with all competitors playing 36-holes Thursday and Friday before a cut is made for the Final Round Saturday. The Championship is FREE for spectators to come out and see one of the strongest fields to tee it up in St. Louis! Follow real-time scoring online at METGA.org!
