Fair Captures 15th Open Championship at Lake Forest
Fair Comes From 2 Shots Back in Final Round to Take Home $20,000 First Prize
Seth Fair, from Whitestown, IN, found himself 2 shots back behind Kevin Kring (Springfield, MO) and Brendon Doyle (Louisville, KY) heading into Saturday’s final round. A solid 3-under par 68 round over the 7,026 yard Lake Forest Country Club on Saturday would push him to the top of the leaderboard at 8-under and take home the $20,000 first place check. Fair will also add his name to the James S. Manion Trophy along with a fellow Hoosier, Adam Schenk who won in 2015.
The win did not come without a little disturbance. Fair was in the 3rd to last group on Saturday and was getting ready to hit his second shot into the 18th when lightning came into the area and play was suspended for and hour and 10 minutes. At that moment, Fair had a one shot advantage over Doyle, who was on 17.
The championship was decided moment after the re-start at 3:50pm. Doyle had hit his drive on 17 into the penalty area, which led to a double-bogey. While Fair made par at 18 and had a 3-shot advantage as the final pairing made there way up the 18th.
Two amateurs would survive the cut in the 15th Open, Ryan Eckelkamp (Washington, MO) and Reilly Ahearn (St. Louis, MO). Eckelkamp would come in with an 8-over par total to capture the Low Amateur honors. Ahearn was the Low Amateur in the 2019 Open Championship.
