Meadowbrook Country Club will host the 30th Amateur Championship this week, joining Norwood Hills CC as the only host of the region’s most sought after amateur title for a 3rd time. Hosting in 2000, Bob Beckmann, a Norwood Hills CC member at the time who would become a Meadowbrook member, would capture the title. Eli Grant, a Meadowbrook member, came out of nowhere to win in 2010 on his home turf.
This edition features six past champions, Beckmann mentioned above along with Skip Berkmeyer (2009), Jimmy Siegfried (2015), Andrew Pranger (2016 & 2018), Shawn Jasper (2017) and defending champion Brad Carpenter (2019) who won the title at Aberdeen Golf Club.
The field is chopped full of the region’s top players with Berkmeyer leading the 2020 Men’s Player of the Year race coming. 2019 Player of the Year Crimson Callahan is in the field along with Ryan Eckelkamp, who currently sits in second behind Berkmeyer in the Player of the Year race. 2020 Missouri Amateur Runner-Up Max Kreikemeier and teammate of Callahan at Missouri State looks to continue his fine play in 2020.
Meadowbrook Country Club will play to a par 72 at about 7,124 yards over the 54-hole championship. The Ballwin layout is always a stern test and superintendent Mike Carron has it looking flawless again after this stretch of unbearable heat. Meadowbrook will be making some major renovations to the course over the next couple years starting this fall.
“Meadowbrook Country Club has been a staunch supporter of MAGA for many years, hosting several MAGA championships and USGA qualifiers. Once again, they have stepped up in 2020 by welcoming the region’s best amateurs to compete for the Jim Tom Blair Trophy in its 30th season,” stated Executive Director Curt Rohe.
The Amateur Championship is a 54-hole stroke play championship. A full field will play 36-holes over Rounds 1 and 2 before a cut to the Low 40 scores and ties will play the Final Round on Saturday, August 8 to crown a champion. Live hole-by-hole scoring will be available at www.metga.org beginning with Round 1 on Thursday morning.
