Allen Wins 28th Senior Amateur
Allen Shoots 67-69 to Clip Field by 3 for Victory
Buddy Allen captured the 28th Senior Amateur Championship on Tuesday at St. Clair Country Club in Belleville, IL. Allen, the 2018 Senior Amateur Champion, began the day with a 3-shot advantage over Tom Portner. That lead evaporated quickly on Tuesday when Portner aced the par 3 2nd Hole while Allen made bogey and they were all tied at -4. The battle ensued between these 2 over the next 16 holes, in fact, Portner grabbed the lead after another bogey by Allen on Hole 3. Portner would finish at 5-under with rounds of 70-69.
Allen would go bogey free the rest of the way, making 5 birdies for his 3-under par 69 and 8-under total over the 36 holes. Portner also made 5 birdies, but 4 bogeys during the same stretch would leave the championship in Allen’s hands. Allen joins Jack Powers, Don Dupske, Ed Schultz, Scott Edwards and Jim Holtgrieve as multiple time Senior Amateur Champions. Speaking of Don Dupske, the 4-time Senior Amateur Champion (1996, 98, 99, 2000) at 84 years young shot 81-73 at St. Clair this week.
Brian Hall would be the only other golfer to finish under par for the championship. Hall went 71-72 for a 1-under total 143. The victory for Allen catapults him into the lead for the 2020 Senior Player of the Year. Joe Malench, with a 5th place finish at St. Clair sits 315 points behind Allen.
