Ferris, Malench Take Home Normandie Amateur Titles

34th Normandie Amateur Played at Glen Echo CC

34th Normandie Amateur Scoring

Chris Ferris continued his great playing as of late in 2020 this weekend at Glen Echo Country Club in the 34th Normandie Amateur.  Ferris, and his entire UMSL team, use Glen Echo as a home course for practice.  So familiarity is not a question for these guys.  Ferris opened up the weekend with a 4-under 67 to take the lead into Sunday.  The 67 included a hole out on his final hole (#7) for birdie to get to 4-under.

Ferris made a bogey on Hole 3 Sunday, but bounced back quickly with a birdie and would card 3 more on the front 9 for a 33 and 3 shot cushion heading to the back. A birdie on 10 and bogey on the difficult 16th would make up his back 9 card and the 2-shot victory was his.

Up ahead on the course, the round of the weekend was being shot by Ferris teammate Nick Hedberg (pictured left).  Hedberg fired an 8-under 63 to post a 5-under in the clubhouse to set the benchmark.  Hedberg had 6 birdies and an eagle on the par 4 5th with no other blemishes on his card for the remarkable round.

Rounding out the top 3 was Tony Gumper who had a 5-under 66 on Sunday to finish solo 3rd. With the victory this weekend, Ferris moved up 5 spots into 2nd on the 2020 Player of the Year Standings, now trails leader Skip Berkmeyer by 268 points.

On the Senior side, Joe Malench captured his 2nd win of 2020, also winning the East Side Amateur.  Malench had rounds of 70-72 to finish at Even par for the win.  David Pfeil was a solo 2nd at 3-over.  Malench closed the gap in the 2020 Senior Player of the Year race and is in 2nd behind Buddy Allen.
