Top amateurs and professionals to compete in annual match,
will be named the Robert A. Shogren Cup
St. Louis, MO – The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association and Gateway PGA Section are proud to jointly announce an annual competition where the top amateurs and Professionals will compete in a Ryder Cup style format. The annual match will be named the Robert A. Shogren Cup honoring Bob Shogren who passed away in 2020. Shogie, as he was affectionately known, was an ambassador for both the amateurs and professionals in our region.
“This match has been played off and on over the years, now was the time to give the match a proper name and honor Shogie. The Shogren Cup continues to fortify a strong relationship between the region’s two leading golf organizations,” commented MAGA Executive Director Curt Rohe.
The inaugural Shogren Cup will be conducted May 23-24 at Bellerive Country Club, Shogren’s home club. The teams will be comprised of amateurs from Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association and professionals from the Gateway PGA Section. Teams will be selected from the association’s player of the year standings and captains’ picks.
Executive Director of the Gateway PGA Section Ali Wells added, “Always a favorite event for our area PGA Professionals, we are excited for the return of these matches showcasing the best of competitive golf and collaborative partnerships”.
MAGA has purchased this beautiful Victorian Sterling Silver cup dating back to 1895 from Nicholas Winton in London. The cup is being engraved “The Robert A. Shogren Cup” with the association logos in London to have in time for the match May 23-24.
