Bellerive CC Set to Host Inaugural Robert A. Shogren Cup
Creve Coeur, MO – The inaugural Robert A. Shogren Cup, a competition between the top amateurs of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA) and top professionals of the Gateway PGA, is set for this weekend (May 23-24) at Bellerive Country Club.
The field was set last week for the event, with teams comprised using player of the year standings as well as captains’ picks.
The Ryder Cup style format will feature Four-Ball Matches on the first day of competition, followed by Foursomes and Singles matches on the second day to decide the Shogren Cup.
The event is named to honor the late Bob “Shogie” Shogren, who passed away in March of 2020. Last February, MAGA honored Shogren with its highest honor, the Meritorious Service Award, for his long-standing dedication and service to golf in this region.
“This match has been played off and on over the years, and now was the time to give the match a proper name and honor Shogie,” MAGA Executive Director Curt Rohe said. “The Shogren Cup continues to fortify a strong relationship between the region’s two leading golf organizations.”
Shogie was a great ambassador for the game in our region. Well known to many as an authority on the Rules of Golf, Shogren got his start in the Rules in the early 90’s working with MAGA in its early beginnings. Shogren would go on to assist many of the other golfing associations around St. Louis, working closely with the Gateway PGA in conducting their championships and events.
“Always a favorite event for our area PGA Professionals, we are excited for the return of these matches showcasing the best of competitive golf and collaborative partnerships,” said Ali Wells, Executive Director of the Gateway PGA Section.
The inaugural Robert A. Shogren Cup will commence with an opening ceremony at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday, May 23, at Bellerive Country Club, immediately followed by Four-Ball matches.
