Neeman Shoots 67 to Lead Chase for George F. Meyer Trophy at Sunset CC
FIRST ROUND RESULTS | SECOND ROUND STARTING TIMES
Sunset Hills, MO – Paul Neeman shot a 5-under 67 in the first round at the 29th Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship to lead the chase for the George F. Meyer trophy.
The Persimmon Woods Golf Club member made the turn at 3-under after four birdies on the par 38 front. Neeman made eagle on the drivable par 4 14th to make up for a bogey on No. 12. A birdie on the last gave him the clubhouse lead at 5-under on day one that would stand.
“The greens were fantastic today, if you get the ball rolling, you’ll make putts,” Neeman said. “The course was a little soft which helped. Golf is a journey, just have to take it a shot at a time and that’s all you can do.”
Tony Nolfo carded a 4-under 68 and is just a shot back of Neeman on the leaderboard. Nolfo’s last two competitive rounds are both in the 60s after he shot a final round 4-under 67 at the Normandie Amateur on Sunday. Nolfo made the turn at 4-over on Tuesday with four birdies and five pars. His only miscue of the day came on the par 4 11th.
“I’ve been hitting it well and the putter’s been working,” Nolfo said. “Same game plan tomorrow, hit greens in regulation and make some putts.”
Joe Malench will round out the final pairing tomorrow afternoon after a 2-under 70. Malench played the first 17 holes bogey-free with three birdies and 14 pars. No. 18 was his only bogey of the day.
“Didn’t make a bogey until the last so when I needed an up and down, I did,” Malench said. “My short game kept me in it when I hit some bad shots. I played last weekend at the Normandie Amateur and didn’t play well at all, so I wanted to come out and at least strike the ball a little better today. Golf is a crazy game; you just grind away and hope you can get something going.
Ellen Port is one of five who shot even par the first day. The Sunset member played the final three holes at 2-under, including a near-ace on the par 3 16th, to get back to even par and be five shots off the lead.
Randy Rachell was 5-over through his first six holes today, but went 5-under the rest of the day to get to even, including back-to-back birdies on No.’s 7 and 8.
13 players are within eight shots of the lead in the championship division.
Final round begins Wednesday morning with times starting at 7:30 a.m.
