Hometown Players Lead Respective Divisions After Day One at Green Hills
FIRST ROUND RESULTS | FINAL ROUND TEE SHEET
Mt. Vernon, IL – Day one of the Southern Illinois Amateur is in the books and two members lead the Open and Senior Division at Green Hills Golf Club.
Brandon Bullard fired a first round 3-under 68 to lead the Open Division by three strokes. Bullard got off to a hot start with an eagle on the par 5 1st hole and made the turn at 2-under. A pair of birdies on the back and a bogey got him in the clubhouse at 3-under and he finished the day as the only player in red figures in the Open Division.
“It’s always good to play at your home course,” Bullard said. “You know the nuances, subtilties. The par 5s were where it was at today, played those well and drove the ball okay. This is a golf course where the greens are the defense, if you put yourself in positions of the tee and hit greens in regulation you can score well.”
Sean Brennan sits in second after an ever par round. Brennan led the field in pars with 16 with a birdie and a bogey.
Nine players are within six shots of the lead in the Open Division.
Tom Portner, another Green Hills Golf Club member, leads the Senior Division after a 5-under 66. Portner was 2-under through five holes but a double on the par 5 6th set him back to even. He would go on to card six birdies his last 12 holes, including four straight on holes 12 through 15, to be in at 5-under.
“I really putted the ball well today,” Portner said. “I had a bad hole on No. 6, par 5 down wind and made a double, kind of aggravated me and got me a little more focused. I was able to play well from then on.”
Matt Reynolds was the only other Senior Division player to finish par or better. Reynolds shot an ever par 71 and is five shots back.
Defending champion Buddy Allen is six shots back after a 1-over 72.
Final round begins Sunday morning with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m.
