2013 MAGA Women’s Championship Going to St. Louis CC

The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association is happy to announce that the 2013 Women’s Amateur Championship will be conducted July 16 & 17 at St. Louis Country Club. This will be the club’s first time hosting the region’s top women amateur golfers.
As many know, the USGA is coming to St. Louis CC in 2014 with the Curtis Cup, bringing some of the world’s top female amateurs to compete in the bi-annual event. In preparation for the 2014 Curtis Cup St. Louis CC saw a great fit to bring the region’s top female amateurs to compete for the Jayne M. Watson Trophy.
Grant Masson, St. Louis CC Head Golf Professional commented on hosting this championship, “St. Louis Country Club is excited to host the 2013 Women’s Metropolitan Amateur Golf Championship. We feel this is a great opportunity for the golfing women in our community to compete at the site of the 2014 Curtis Cup.”
2013 be the 21st year of the women’s championship. Twelve of those championship have been won by Ellen Port, including a stretch of seven consecutive from 2000-2006. The MAGA Women’s Amateur is open to any female golfer with an active USGA GHIN Handicap Index of 25.4 or below. There is a Championship Flight for the Jayne M. Watson Trophy and then other flights are determined by indexes.
However, the two-time defending champion of the event is Shwete Galande. The University of Missouri-St. Louis product is completing her senior campaign for the Tritons and we hope will certainly be back to attempt the three-peat.
This will be St. Louis CC’s second MAGA Championship, having hosted the 2011 Amateur where another UMSL Triton, Ryan Penfield prevailed. The club has also hosted several USGA Qualifying Rounds, ironically in each year a USGA Championship was conducted in the St. Louis area. They were: 1999 US Mid-Am; 2001 USGA Senior Am; 2004 US Senior Open and 2007 US Junior Amateur.
With the 2014 Curtis Cup, the club will be hosting its 6th USGA Championship. They previously hosted the 1921 & 1960 US Amateur; 1925 & 1972 US Women’s Amateur and the 1947 US Open.
