Kovach opens 8 shot lead heading to Saturday final round
Kovach Only Player in Field Under Par After 36 Holes
30th AMATEUR SCORING | FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS
Chris Kovach leads the 30th Amateur Championship at Meadowbrook Country Club after rounds of 69-67 for an 8-under total. The 8-under par total over the Ballwin layout is impressive in itself; however, to emphasize that more Kovach is the only player from the 135 players who started Thursday to be under par for 36-holes.
“I have had some good finishes, some top 5’s, but never been in a position to win,” stated Kovach following his round. “With this summer I haven’t had it all going quite this well, but this week everything had been working. I have played Meadowbrook several times over the years in tournaments so I knew where I needed to be and have had a lot of uphill putts and good looks.”
Kovach has carded 13 birdies to go along with 5 bogeys in carding the 8-under total thus far. The 136 total over the first two rounds ties the record start defending champion Brad Carpenter had at Aberdeen Golf Club in 2019. Kovach will look to widen that gap on Saturday, he will be in the final pairing with Chris Ferris who sits at Even par and alone in 2nd. Kovach and Ferris will go at 10:10am.
2009 Champion Skip Berkmeyer carded a 1-under par 71 on Friday and sits at T-3 with Chad Niezing, they at 1-over for the championship. Berkmeyer came into the championship with the lead for the 2020 Player of the Year race.
The field was cut with 40 players surviving for Saturday’s final round at Meadowbrook Country Club. Final round pairings begin at 7:00am with the leaders going at 10:10am from Hole 1. All scoring and final round pairings are available at the links at the top of the page.
